Class 2 - Years 1 & 2

Class 2

Mrs. Tinsley, Mrs. Oxford and the children of Class 2 welcome you to our class page.

We use this page to share our fun and exciting learning journey!

Here's where you'll find class information and photos of what we've been up to.

Music - 'The Wizard's Hat' activity which encouraged the children to experiment with voice, pulse and rhythm as well as conducting.

Autumn Topic 'The Great Fire of London' - blending chalks to create flames

Class of 2022 - 2023

Very impressive seascape water colour Paintings

Programming & Algorithms with BeeBots

The children worked successfully in pairs to plan, record a sequence of instructions and program the BeeBots to follow these. They were very quick to realise the importance of including 'go' in their sequences and to press 'clear' before inputting a new sequence.

A day at the 'beach'!

To end our Summer Term 2 topic 'Beside the Seaside', the seaside came to school! We had a great time searching for treasure using the metal detector, playing games such as 'hook a duck' and winning prizes in the arcade.

Boats that Float - STEM Challenge!

A fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) challenge got Class 1 and 2 working together. This simple tin foil boat activity encouraged the children to make predictions, problem solve, work collaboratively and use some very big numbers. Excellent work everyone!

Class 2 poets and they didn't know it! Reciting a stanza from the poem, 'In the Land of the Flibbertigibbets' by John Foster.

Our Summer Science Topic - Plants

Class 2 are loving their science topic on plants. This week, the Year 1s have been identifying and recording garden and wild plants found around school. The Year 2s have set up a cree comparative experiment, growing cress in different conditions. They've made very sensible predictions and recorded their findings.

A visit from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to discuss safety in the home and how to avoid accidental fires. The children took turns to 'Stop, Drop and Roll'.

The Year 2s have been learning all about microhabitats. They discovered popular microhabitats in our nature garden to be spaces between/under rocks, the soil and clumps of grass which are home to ants, woodlice, millipedes, snails, spiders and caterpillars. They then presented their findings in a pictograph.

Colour Chaos - Drip Painting inspired by famous artist, Jackson Pollock

We had a fantastic time at Nottingham Castle to end our literacy topic on traditional tales and story-telling. The children travelled back in time to learn more about the legend of Robin Hood through role-play, played on the mixed-reality games, explored the castle-themed adventure playground and finished the visit spending their pocket money in the gift shop. The children were so enthusiastic and well behaved. Castle staff kept commenting on how polite the children were - well done Class 2!

In Design & Technology we have been exploring sculptures and made our own fairy-tale themed sculptures. Here we are painting them!

World Book Day in Class 2

Spring Term 1 Topic 'Our Local Area'

The children followed maps of Clifton village, identifying landmarks and recording their observations. They walked as far as the Shrovetide goal and enjoyed a game of Pooh Sticks before returning back to school.

Once upon a time in Class 2 the children made reversible characters and settings having thought about twists in Fairy Tales. Some then used their puppets to tell their own tales full of princesses, magic, castles and of course plenty of villains! Luckily they all ended their tales with "and they all lived happily ever after".

Golden Time is lots of fun!

End of Term Treat! We enjoyed watching Finding Nemo whilst eating popcorn (in our hand decorated cones) and drinking hot chocolate!

Making Christingles as part of our learning on Incarnation

The Year 1 children made Autumn Discovery Bottles as part of their science unit 'Seasonal Changes'. We think they look great!

On our class autumn science walk, the Year 2s did a litter pick, recording what they found and the Year 1s identified signs of autumn. Their hard work was rewarded with a play on the park.

Amazing landscape art inspired by our 'What a Wonderful World' topic

National Poetry Day 2021

As part of our poetry unit 'Pattern, Rhythm and Rhyme' we have been learning lots of poems with repeating parts and rhyming words. We happened to be learning the poem 'Splish, Splash, Splosh' on National Poetry Day (7th October) 2021!! We took inspiration from Michael Rosen and performed our poem using actions. We watched a video of Michael perform his poem 'Chocolate Cake' which we found hilarious!

Harvest Masks for Harvest Festival

The Morning the Chairs Quit!

Linking to our focus text, The Day the Crayons Quit, Class 2 had quite a surprise this morning when our chairs decided to quit! They left a letter telling us how upset they were with not being pushed in, being rocked on or dragged and one was cross at Mrs Tinsley for standing on it when reaching up to a display! We quickly made a plan. We wrote letters of apology to the chairs and drew pretty pictures, and luckily after lunch the chairs returned - phew!

Our literacy focus text (Autumn Term 1) 'The Day the Crayons Quit'

Our Autumn Term 1 topic 'What a Wonderful World' and using Atlases!
